Description
SCARCE!!!This is USGS Bulletin 922-J, “
Chromite Deposits in the Seiad Quadrangle, Siskiyou County, California
.” Published in 1940, there can’t be many of these around anymore. This publication consists of the 26-page book and BOTH OF THE ORIGINAL MAPS, one of which is an index map showing the locations of mines and prospects. At least one of the mines was developed with underground workings. Chromite, serpentine, anthophyllite, talc, tremolite, chalcedony, and magnetite have been found in these mines, as well as the rare, rich green chrome garnet called uvarovite. In addition, garnet crystals are found in pegmatites in the area!
Perhaps even more minerals have since been found in this area. In addition, quite a number of sites in this area are discussed in the book:
Barton Claim
Prospect – name unknown
Seiad Creek deposit
Dolbear mine
Fairview group of claims, including Hamburg Bar Mine
Neptune claim
Liberty claim
Jumbo claim
Red Butte claim
Octopus claim
Black Spot #1
Black Spot #2
Unknown prospect
This publication makes not only a great guide for the collector wanting to visit this area, but also a unique historical record of this district. This is a rare publication on an interesting and historical mining area. This is a rare opportunity for the collector of California minerals, the historian, or anyone that wants to give the place a crack!
